Service Summary
I have worked on many committees and task forces at the university and outside the university. I have been especially active in ABET accreditation reviews and have been instrumental in helping the Department deal with ABET’s assessment requirements.
I have worked on some key international projects. I was one of the people who helped UMaine start the American University in Bulgaria. I have been active in Ukraine as well. I was the founding Dean of the American-Ukrainian Faculty, and worked hard to win a NATO grant that permitted us to build a fiber-optic municipal area network in the city of Ternopil Ukraine. For my many services in Ukraine, the Ternopil National Economic University awarded me an Honorary Doctorate in August 2010.
I am interested in getting more minority participation in technical areas. In 2009-2010, I won a Libra Diversity Grant and was able to bring the noted African-American mathematician Dr. Jonathan Farley to the University of Maine for the month of February. I was then able to find funding to bring him to the University of Maine as an Associate Professor of Computer Science for 2010-2011 and also for 2011-2012. In April 2011, I brought Professor Juan Gilbert, a distinguished African-American Computer Scientist at Clemson University, to lecture at the University of Maine.
Since May 2010, I have been participating in NSF sponsored workshops and activities to develop a broader impacts infrastructure to support researchers seeking NSF funding. In January 2011, Congress passed a bill requiring NSF to increase the importance of broader impacts in awarding grants. This bill also changed a number of the broader impact criteria, so it is necessary to train researchers and panelist on the nature of the new criteria and how to meet them. Departments that understand the implications in these changes will be more successful in competing for grants.
I have worked extensively with groups of first responders and provided them opportunities for workshops and training. Much of the training was hands-on and very practical.
Of special interest have been activities in the area of economic development. These are described in a separate section.
In July 2011, the University of Maine created a new School of Computing and Information Science. I was one of the organizers of the effort to create the School and now I serve as the Associate Director of the School.
